“Plein is really plain”

I didn't get the fascination of some people with the square. Big plain plaza with historical buildings surrounding it, located next to the seat of the government. Yes, people are sitting in the cafes and restaurant, having beer, watching other people but this SO NOT the people-watching like in Paris and Rome. Something is missing.
