Grantchester

Hi. My name is Alex, and I am addicted to British drama productions.

Instead of getting help, I'm spreading the insanity among others.

My latest discovery is the ITV detective period drama set in 1950s Grantchester, village near Cambridge. Main character is a local priest who finds himself involved not only in private lives of locals (widely, and sometimes wickedly, practiced by religious representatives all over the world) but also in solving deaths that happen, alright, more than often in a small English village. What sounds like boring story full of cats and teapots is actually wisely driven plot that includes details like his moral doubts on lying and stealing, whiskey preferred before tea or sherry, and The Pretty he secretly lusts for.

Other characters are as vivid: police detective soaked in beer, bossy housekeeper gifted to be an angry priest herself, rich flamboyant childhood friend, insecure gay curate and German widow come-and-go penfriend and potential wife material.

With a separate mystery in each of six episodes, it is really easy to watch. Not as sumptuous as the crown jewel Downton Abbey, it is still more appealing than plenty of broadcast trash. British school of acting at its best and script balanced between Christie's Poirot and Australian A place to call home will make you lust for another cup of tea with just another episode.
