The first time I contacted Church of Scientology was in the early 1990s, and as an all-time fan of science, sci-fi, space and devout researcher of the faiths, I found them quite modern in the sea of boring philosophies that accented past and history as more important than view to the future. As someone who is constantly looking within self for improvement and development, I was caught in CoS promise to learn something new that might help me in all aspects of life.
Who wouldn't?
I got the questionnaire that all members should fill out. It was full of (sometimes really ridiculous) questions and checkboxes after each, but hey, can you really answer
"Would you use corporal punishment on a child aged ten if it refused to obey you?" or
"Can you get quite enthusiastic over 'some simple little thing'?" or
"Do you enjoy telling people latest scandal about your associates?" or
"Do you get occasional twitches of your muscles, when there is no logical reason for it?"
or my all-time favorite
"Do you browse through railway timetables, directories or dictionaries just for pleasure?"
Seriously, people?
I also had "Dianetics", the handbook it all started from, actually I think I still have it somewhere on the shelves. Hilarious thing, trust me, and I've been reading a lot. Volcanoes, aliens, spaceships, higher minds attached to our bodies that cause our fears, kryo-something, technology...just to give you a hint of what is going on there. Never really got involved with them, since the lady who was responsible for communication with me couldn't respond few basic questions I asked. I wasn't impressed and lost interest (alright, I like to jerk any church official, like I always tease Mormons about the lack of fashion sense, or I softly whisper 'I am a child of Satan' whenever Jehova's witnesses appear on my door) but I still like their pompous public appearance. Besides, they are the only sort-of-religion (that I know of) having orgs dealing with few important issues in today society, and my respect goes to that only: Narconon, Criminon and the org that connects artists all over the word (cannot recall the name).
But at what price?
In case you missed all the buzz caused by it two weeks ago, you may see the answers in the HBO movie called "Going clear: Prison of belief", an excellent documentary on one of the most secretive cults/orgs/oh,whatahell, let's call it real name corporations today. What you will see is an excellent in-depth view of it, through the eyes of ex-members that will sometimes leave you open mouthed. Physical and psychological abuse, new ways of frauds and blackmails, intimidating and brain-washing with all techmiques used, will sometimes give you shivers and sometimes runny eyes. These personal testimonies will make you understand what made these (and still does to others) people do the most humiliating things.
This is the story of abuse of trust and faith, naivete and the struggle to get special powers. Not in Scientology but in every organized belief system in the world.
As always, I am generous, almost as a great cult leader. For info purpose, you may see this movie online just by clicking on the link below:
